The plight of working horses, donkeys, and camels in Egypt, especially around the Pyramids, is a grave concern. These animals endure unbearable hardships, lacking essential care, adequate rest, proper nutrition, and clean water. Such treatment is not only inhumane but also breaches international animal welfare standards and contradicts the teachings of the Muslim faith.
According to the Society for Protection of Animal Rights in Egypt (SPARE), there are roughly 3 million working equines in Egypt suffering from severe neglect and abuse. Malnutrition, exhaustion, and insufficient veterinary care are common, worsened by economic challenges and a lack of awareness among their handlers.
We call upon the Egyptian government to take immediate action: enforce stringent regulations on animal welfare, ensure access to necessary health resources, and educate handlers on humane treatment practices. The use of horses and donkeys in the tourism industry subjects them to overwork, inadequate care, and harsh conditions. Implement and rigorously enforce laws that protect working animals from abuse and neglect. Establish clear guidelines for the humane treatment of these animals, including proper feeding, watering, and resting schedules. Regular inspections should be conducted to ensure compliance, and severe penalties should be imposed for violations.
The government should promote alternative, humane methods of transport and sightseeing that do not rely on animal labour. By supporting the development of animal-free tourism options, we can reduce the exploitation of these animals and protect their well-being.
